Lesson Learned – Let loose and allow yourself to make mistakes
and be messy. It can be more beautiful.
I am a very meticulous person when it comes to my artwork. I
want it to be perfect. Well this is difficult to do, takes a lot of time, and I’m
always disappointed.
In printmaking this year, my classmates and I put on a small
year-end show. I was running late so they decided to put one of my pieces up
for me. I had all of my work, so I was a bit confused. When I got there I
realised they had found one of my scrap pieces that I just do practice runs on
before I use my good paper. I never try to line anything up on those sheets,
it’s just to make sure the ink is coming through properly and to see the image
before using my expensive paper. I left it for garbage. Wow! It actually looked
great, in fact better than my final pieces that I meticulously put together. This
made me rethink how I work. I learned that I need to let loose and be more
messy. My teacher was very happy if that was the only thing I took away from
this course, it’s what she has been encouraging in me all along.
